Portraits of Washington
Johnston, Elizabeth Bryant. ORIGINAL PORTRAITS OF WASHINGTON, INCLUDING STATUES, MONUMENTS, AND MEDALS. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1882. Folio, contemporary blue three quarter morocco with mottled sides; spine with five raised bands, lettered in gilt; marbled endpapers; all page edges gilt. xxii, 257, (1) pages; 2 pages of facsimile autographs of artists; 32 fine plates, mostly heliotypes, 1 depicting medals. Inscribed and signed by the author. Binding rubbed and in some places weak, with a few detached leaves. Very good or so. A handsomely produced, imposing publication. Scarce. While having consulted the standard authorities, the author notes in the Acknowledgement that, in giving the history of original portraits she preferred, when obtainable, "the opinion of Washington's contemporaries as to the relative merits of these works" and that "a large portion of the data has been received through different mediums,-such as government archives, unpublished diaries, letters; and from living sources,-members of the Washington family, and the owners of, or those familiar with, the works." This copy could use some minor work, but it is worth it. Sigler 1407.
