Rare Wartime Ciani Sale
Ciani, P. MONNAIES, MÉDAILLES, JETONS. Paris: Vente Hotel Drouot, 12 mars 1943. Me Étienne Pruvost, Commissaire-Priseur. 12mo, original printed card covers. 12 pages, interleaved with graph paper; 198 lots. Hand-priced in pencil, with a number of buyers' names recorded; interleaves ruled by hand with some annotations. Covers detached, but present. Good. An intriguing little volume. It appears to be the firm's bidbook, though only a fraction of the lots sold have the names of a buyer recorded, and there are only occasional annotations on the interleaves. The only indication that this sale was conducted or catalogued by the Ciani firm is on the title pages, which notes that "Une Exposition aura lieu à partir du 8 Mars 1943 chez M. CIANI, Numismate, 54, rue Taitbout, qui se charge également d'exécuter les commissions que MM. les amateurs voudront lui confier." This sale is not included in the Fitzwilliam Museum's collections, was not included in the extensive Rossi Library, and is not in the library of the American Numismatic Society.
