Margolis's Own Set of His Fixed Price Lists
Margolis, Richard. FIXED PRICE LIST NOS. 1–60. An apparently complete set. Englewood & Teaneck, 1958–2000. Nos. 1–23 are original duplicated typescript lists, as issued on 8.5 by 14 inch paper, stapled in the corner. Self-covered, generally 4–8 pages. Generally very good, with some staple rust; Nos. 20–23 stained. Also present is his Mail Bid Sale No. 1, in the same format, dated February 7, 1962. The only public auction conducted under his name, dated May 27–29, 1960 and held in conjunction with the Empire States Numismatic Association, is present with the prices realized list included. Lists Nos. 24–60 were printed in a small octavo format. Nos. 24–38 and Nos. 39–53 are bound in two matching volumes: brown quarter calf with front covers and spines lettered in gilt. Nos. 54–60 are as published, laid into the second bound volume. Fine. [with] TYPEWRITTEN TEXT FOR EARLY ADVERTISEMENTS. Seven original or duplicated typescripts for use in preparing ads for Numismatic Scrapbook, The Numismatist, World Coin Bulletin, and World Coins, 1963–1965, plus a proof of one of his Scrapbook ads. Very good. Published in a modest duplicated format, the early Margolis lists are rarely encountered. Introducing himself in his first list, Margolis wrote, "I am at least as anxious to buy good foreign material as to sell it, not only choice crowns and talers, but interesting minor coins, essays, medals, tokens, etc. I will pay really good prices for above average material, and believe it will be worth your while to write me if you have anything for sale." Even in his first four-page listing (1958), Margolis comes across as a careful cataloguer and a meticulous professional. The later lists are more professional in appearance and are illustrated. The main series ended with No. 59 in 1979. Margolis revived it, however, twenty-one years later, issuing a modestly produced list of numismatic literature for sale as Fixed Price List No. 60. A remarkable run of publications.
