Priced & Named 1847 Wilson Sale
Sotheby, S. Leigh & Co. CATALOGUE OF A VALUABLE ASSEMBLAGE OF ANCIENT AND MODERN COINS AND MEDALS, INCLUDING THE COLLECTION OF ENGLISH COINS IN GOLD AND SILVER, OF THE LATE WALTER WILSON, ESQ. TOGETHER WITH MANY VALUABLE NUMISMATIC WORKS, RINGS, BRONZES, PICTURES, CAPITAL COIN CABINETS, &C. London, 26–30 July 1847. Small 8vo, original printed paper covers. 60 pages; 776 lots. Neatly hand-priced and named in ink. Very good or better. According to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Wilson (1781–1847) "died on 21 February 1847, having caught a cold while rescuing his book collection from rain which was coming through the roof of his house." While catalogues from the era preceding the use of photographic plates are often regarded as being of little use for tracing provenance, catalogues where the name of the purchaser has been recorded are a rather notable exception, and can extend provenances back decades further.
