Necessity Issues of World War I
Ciani, Louis. CATALOGUE ILLUSTRÉ DES MONNAIES FRANÇAISES DE LA GUERRE, 1914–1919. Paris, undated (c. 1926). 39, (1) pages; text illustrations; 1136 listings at fixed prices. [bound with] Denis, Ch. CATALOGUE DE MONNAIES DE NÉCESSITÉ ÉMISES DEPUIS 1914. NOUVEAU SUPPLÉMENT. Paris, juillet 1924. Septième édition. 29, (3) pages. [bound with] Mirot, L. MONNAIES DE GUERRE DE LA REGION PARISIENNE. Paris, 1918. 15, (1) pages; 3 plates. Small 8vo, contemporary blue cloth-backed mottled boards; spine lettered in gilt; original printed paper covers bound in. Near fine. The main work is a very scarce and a remarkable little publication, listing and illustrating coins and tokens. Along with Schulman's related catalogues of WWI-era medals, one of the earliest works on the subject. The inside rear wrap advertises Ciani's classic 1926 work on French royal coins as being "sous presse," helping to date this very interesting production. The Denis supplement and the little publication by Mirot are both rare. Ex 1994 Joint Kolbe/Spink New York Book Auction, lot 341.
