A Rare Work on Napoleonic Medals
Edwards, Edward. A BRIEF DESCRIPTIVE CATALOGUE OF THE MEDALS STRUCK IN FRANCE, AND ITS DEPENDENCIES, BETWEEN THE YEARS 1789 AND 1830, CONTAINED IN THE CABINET OF THE BRITISH MUSEUM, WITH THE DEFICIENCIES NOTED. BY THE EDITOR OF "THE NAPOLEON MEDALS." London: J. and C. Adlard, 1837. Not Printed for Sale. 8vo, original cloth-backed printed boards. viii, (128) pages. Both covers neatly detached, with accompanying signature; restorable, and very good. Rare. The work criticizes the British Museum for the incompleteness of its collection of French medals, although in his preface the author says "I earnestly beg that I may not be understood as wishing to convey any censure, direct or indirect, on the officers of the British Museum, for the deficiencies which confessedly exists in this respect..." Edwards had a habit of biting off more than he could chew: his more commonly encountered The Napoleon Medals promises coverage to 1815 but stops at 1810; the present work claims to go through 1830 while in fact only six pages are devoted to "1816 to 1830," with 1824 being the latest date covered. Engel & Serrure 2413. Ex Spink Auction 55 (1986), lot 1067.
