Engel & Serrure's Important Bibliography
Engel, Arthur, and Raymond Serrure. RÉPERTOIRE DES SOURCES IMPRIMÉES DE LA NUMISMATIQUE FRANÇAISE. TOME PREMIER, TOME DEUXIÈME, SUPPLÉMENT ET TABLE. Paris 1887–1889. Three volumes. Large 8vo, contemporary matching red quarter morocco with mottled sides; spines with four raised bands, ruled and lettered in gilt; all page edges speckled. xix, (1), 399, (1); (4), 494, (2); viii, 257, (1) pages; 92 + 7916 entries. Hand-numbered spine labels. Near fine. The Furstenberg set. Among the best numismatic bibliographies ever written. It is a superlative example of what a numismatic bibliography should be. Too few other bibliographers have fully adopted its approach. In addition to providing an exhaustive record of books and articles covering the entire range of French numismatics, Engel and Serrure typically provide a few biographical words about the author, often an overview of the work in terms of content and significance, accompanied by publication date, place, and publisher, along with the number of pages and plates, where applicable. The supplement/index volume is rare, and most helpful. Clain-Stefanelli 8877*. Kolbe 102. Ex Sotheby's 1982 sale of the Furstenberg numismatic library, lot 173.
