Maximinus I. AD 235-238. AR Denarius (18.5mm, 3.22 g, 1h). Rome mint. 3rd emission, late AD 236-237. Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Pax standing left, holding olive branch and scepter. RIC IV 19; BMCRE 144-6; RSC 37. Lustrous with a hint of toning. In NGC encapsulation, 4284928-050, graded MS. Strike: 5/5, Surface: 3/5.
A fully lustrous example struck from fresh dies. The face of Pax on the reverse is complete, as are all other details. Rare as such, as reverse dies saw significantly longer use than the obverses. A couple tiny hairlines but nothing to suggest why NGC gave this coin a surface grade of 3/5. A wonderful coin.
