Cyprus, 1941, 3 Piastres on 1 shilling, VF, B126, Very Rare, To address a shortage of coinage caused by the rising value of silver during World War II, 1-shilling notes were overprinted by the Government Printing Office in Nicosia with a new 3-piastre denomination (1 shilling equalled 9 piastres). Cheats soon discovered that the overprint could be removed with benzine, thereby tripling the value of the note. To prevent this fraud, the 1-shilling notes were instead cut into two pieces, with the smaller portion bearing the signature of the Commission of Currency overprinted and the larger portion bearing the king's portrait destroyed.
