Merovingia Francia, National Series (c. 630-650), AV Tremissis, Dorestad, Madelinus, imitative, linear borders, DORESTAT FIT, braided and draped bust right, with pointy nose and pellet lips, rev. MAD·ELINUS M, unbarred A and delta D, cross on single step, six equidistant pellets below, 1.20g, 200° (SCBI 69, 1082 this coin; cf. Belfort 1760-65; T&S pp. 251-4; MEC I, 493), hairline split at 8 o'clock, otherwise a most impressive coin, admirable for its native naivety as much for its well-centred and uniform striking, about extremely fine.

One of at least two-dozen recorded examples of Dorestat-signature Tremisses, of the moneyer Madelinus who is known to have also operated at Maastricht. This specimen depicting a pellet adjoining the top of the cross subsequently form the prototype for Pseudo-Madelinus silver issues that are designated as 'Series MA' in Sceatta typologies.
