Anglo-Saxon England, Transitional Coinage, Shilling, Valdobertus/Vernus type, Series A, Early or Experimental [?], type 69, +V^^IP[OI]BE^[S (?)], the P reversed [VALDOBERTVS], neatly seriffed letters, radiate and pelleted bust right, rev. Beaded standard, tufa above, seriffed crosses to sides (?) and below, 1.20g, 35° (SL 3-50 plate coin; Abramson 2012a, Fig 15; and 2012b, Fig 1b; SCBI 69, 39 this coin; cf. Blackburn, The 'Offa' Sceat', 2010, no. 32; Prou [1892], 69; T&S pp. 144, 148; Hill [1953], type 69, plate VII, no. 17; JMP 3466-68), toned, good very fine.

From the same obverse die as Spink Numismatic Circular 1970, pp. 407, no. 11172, where the inscription is delineated as VVAIPOIRF. It has been
suggested that this variety provides a link between the two groups of the Vernus type.
