Gilt Proof "Original" Copper Company of Upper Canada 1/2 Penny Token 1794 Proof Details (Reverse Scratched) NGC, Br-721, PF-4 var. From Stack's March 11, 1998 auction where it was described as,"Brilliant Proof, bright yellow in color with fully reflective fields, frosty devices, and sharply impressed designs. Edge decorated with fine, regularly spaced, shallow diagonal lines resembling engrailing.206gns, 29.0 mm. Rim thickness 2.1 to 2.35mm. Struck in copper, fire-gilt at Boulton's Soho Mint in Birmingham. Unique, this is the only one we have ever seen or heard of. Light scratches on reverse above COMPANY in the inscription. These tokens were struck in England, on the orders of Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe, as a coinage proposal for Upper Canada." The coin sold for over $15,000 in 1998.
Obviously, this incredible, Unique, gilt example is a major rarity in the Canada token series. and we can also find no other offering of this item.
