ISLAMIC, Anatolia & al-Jazira (Post-Seljuk). Zangids (Syria). temp. Nur al-Din Mahmud. AH 541-569 / AD 1146-1173. Æ Dirham (25mm, 3.56 g, 6h). Contemporary imitation of an al-Halab (Aleppo) mint issue. Two Byzantine-style imperial figures standing facing, holding between them labarum set on three steps; al-umar in Arabic to left / Christ standing facing on daïs; to right, IC (with macron above)/+/ω. Cf. S&S Type 73; cf. Album 1850; CNG E-198, lot 342. Dark brown surfaces, a couple of spots of hard green on obverse. Fine.

S&S notes that the skill of the engravers producing the type varies considerably and that legends are often blundered. It could even be an imitation of Mahmud's official issue, perhaps struck by Crusaders (see Album, 1850, note).
