Trier. Johann Hugo gold Medal of 5-1/2 Ducats ND (1680-1690) AU58 NGC, Bohl-Unl., cf. Schneemann, "Die Klostermünzen im Sprengel der trierischen Erzdiöcese" (Jahresbericht der Gesellschaft für nützliche Forschungen zu Trier 1858), pg. 51 (in silver), Müller-1732 var. (same), Reimmann-2482 var. (same), Reichel Collection-2852 var. (R3; same), Heräus-pg. 3, n. 7, cf. Forrer III, pg. 459. 34mm. 19.13gm. By Joseph Longerich. By all indications an entirely unique piece in gold, a type of similar description has been noted in silver in the Reimmann and Reichel collections. Under his entry for Longerich, Forrer records that his initials, I. L., appear on, "a medal with the bust of the Prelate," though whether that references a piece of similar design to the present offering, or one more in line with the cast in the Staatliche Münzsammlung in Munich (inventory no. 2/123 II/5) is highly unclear.
Certainly elegant, the overall execution is expertly balanced over the open fields, though light handling exists in-line with the grade. A watery backlight permeates the surfaces, catching flints of sky-blue tone along the silhouettes of the devices. Perhaps the best indication for the purpose of this selection comes from the biblical citation on the reverse, which quotes Psalm 30:16: "My lots are in thy hands. Deliver me out of the hands of my enemies; and from them that persecute me." Most likely this either references the occupation of the Archbishopric by French troops during the War of the Reunions from June to July 1684, or the French Invasion during the Nine Years' War in 1688. In either case, the date of production could hardly have fallen outside of Longerich's tenure as mintmaster and engraver at Trier, which the Standard Catalog states was between 1680 to 1690.
