SICILY, Syracuse, time of Timoleon (B.C. 345-306), silver 2 litrai (dilitron), (1.61 g), struck 344-339/8 B.C., obv. youthful Janiform head, laureate, **SURAKOS IWN* around, dolphin downwards to right, rev. free horse prancing left, star of fourteen rays above, (S.964, BMC 285, SNG Cop.719, SNG ANS 517, Pozzi 1302 (same dies), SNG Lloyd 1451 (same dies), HGC 2, 1374). Toned, extremely fine and very rare.
With old collector's comment as given to him many years ago in Sicily by his uncle a coin and stamp dealer in Messina when very young. A similar example sold in CNG Triton XVII (lot 76) realised $4750 US.
