THESSALY, Larissa, (460-450 B.C.), silver drachm (4.21 g), obv. the hero Thessalos, with petasos hanging around neck, restraining bull right by band around its head, lotus below, dotted border, rev. horse prancing to left with long rein hanging, **LA- RI* around within incuse square. (S.2106, BCD 372.5 [Triton XV] for similar dies, Lorber, Thessalian 9 var. [no lotus], Hermann Group IIIB, pl.I, 22 [same obverse die, 411, BCD Thessaly II 152 [same dies], HGC 4, 411). Slightly rough surface from hoard patination, otherwise fine - very fine and very rare.
Ex BCD Collection with his ticket and photos, acquired in May 1985 for 100 SFr., a similar but better example in CNG Triton XV (lot 152) realised $5500.
