Mr A.H.Rourke was a committee member of the Charters Towers Pastoral, Agricultural and Mining Association. He was also a racehorse owner and breeder and on the committee of the Townsville Turf Club (TTC). In 1874 he marked out a track and erected a temporary stand, mostly at his own expense, to facilitate the move of the TTC from its original track at Cleveland Park to its present location at Cluden, a bigger site close to the railway station.
