(t) CHINA. Silver Dollar Pattern, CD (1907). Tientsin Mint. PCGS MS-65+ Gold Shield.
L&M-20; K-212; WS-0025; Wenchao-89 (rarity two stars). Tied for finest certified on the PCGS population report with just one other example. This highly attractive example of a short-lived issue exhibits crisp, bold devices and lovely, smooth, satiny surfaces. The fantastic multicolored patina immediately engages those viewing it, dripping with originality. The finely engraved dies offer intricate design elements with alluring, distinctive features of interlocking wave patterns around the periphery of the reverse. This ever-popular issue is always in demand and is especially coveted in this elite state of preservation.
This Dollar is a representative of the first set of Tai Ching Ti Kuo silver coinage. These issues--struck in limited quantities with a familiar obverse design based on the imperial copper issues beginning in 1906--were placed into circulation and, in less than a year, were replaced by the 1908 issues.
