RUSSIA. Gold "Unveiling of the Alexander II Monument in Liubech" Medallic Ruble, 1898-AP. St. Petersburg Mint. Nicholas II. PCGS SPECIMEN-62 Gold Shield.
Fr-Unlisted; Bit-M327 ([R4]; this coin plated and cited); Dia-1262.1 var. (silver); Sev-4055 var. (same); Uzd-4198 var. (same). Diamter: 33.7mm; Weight: 34.81 gms. Plain Edge. By A. Griliches. Obverse: Bare head of Alexander II left; Reverse: View of Alexander's monument in Liubech. EXTRAORDINARILY RARE and quite likely UNIQUE, this medallic issue in gold parallels a more common (yet still fairly rare) ruble in silver, itself rated as R2 by Bitkin. A few light scuffs and marks are noted in the fields, but are rather consistent with the dazzling prooflike nature of the surfaces. A majestic offering and one which will undoubtedly attract collectors across many fields, such as those with advanced cabinets dedicated to gold issues, rare and intriguing medals, or the finest of those centered around Russian numismatics--for which this piece is absolutely a must.
