Medals by Subject, Dance, Belgium, Les Ballets Russes, uniface bronze medal of key-hole shape [1932], by Godefroid Devreese (1861-1941), a dancer lifts a diaphanous ballerina above his head, her robe elegantly swirling, 84 x 46mm. (Willenz 357), very fine and rare
Diaghilev's 'Ballets Russes' was formed in 1909. However, this medal relates to the 'Original Ballet Russe', previously the 'Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo', formed in 1931 by René Blum and Colonel Wassily de Basil. The medal probably features Léonide Massine (1896-1979) and Irina Baronova (1919-2008). The medal, a companion for Devreese's more famous 'Pastorale', is sometimes described as depicting Anna Pavlova, however this is unlikely since she had died in January 1931.
