The famous 'Bronze Horseman' is the work of Étienne Maurice Falconet (1716–1791), who was invited to Russia by Catherine in 1766. The lengthy work was achieved with the help of his assistant Emelyan Khailov and his pupil and step-daughter, Marie-Anne Collot. It is believed that it is she who modelled the head. When it came to the inauguration by Catherine, on 7 August, 1782, Falconet had returned to France, however he was sent two specimens of this medal, one in gold and one silver.
In the curious way of Russian medals, this same medal was struck in 8 varieties, in 5 sizes and involving 6 medallists.
An example of the largest (80.5mm.) and extremely rare silver medal was recently sold in Monte Carlo by MDC Monnaies de Collection sarl, 29 October 2020, lot 1045 and realised €19,000)
