The battle took place during the American war and was a part of General George Washington's unsuccessful attempt to retake Philadelphia. Stainton confirms that the medal was commissioned by General Sir George Osborn, the Regiment's patron colonel from 1786 to 1818 and not, as is often reported, by Colonel Musgrave.
