The Eccles Collection | Charles II (1660-1685), Shilling, 1668 over 7 [?], second bust, reads DEI GRATIA (no stop [?]), rev. stop after HIB, seven strings to harp, edge straight grained, 5.94g, 6h (cf. Spink 3372; cf. ESC 511/513 [cf. 1030]; Pywell-Phillips 56 same reverse die), flawing to hair, a radiating die break through reverse legend and scratches in third quarter, otherwise toned, good fine, a most curious variety unlisted in the major references.
A mysterious coin on two counts. Firstly there appears no obvious pellet stop between DEI and GRATIA. Even if one accounts for obverse die flawing and haymarking in that vicinity, the legend is still unusually tightly spaced before the portrait. Secondly the radiating die break on the reverse is more progressed than its parallel sold at the Pywell-Phillips dispersal through our rooms (30-31 October 2018, lot 56), but only on the present coin is there any suggestion of an 8/7 overdate.
Estimate: £120 - £180
