Tromp's destruction of the Spanish Armada at the Battle of the Downs in 1639 effectively ended Spanish sea power. The indecisive Battle of the Texel which incurred heavy losses on both sides, was fought between the Dutch and English forces as the Dutch tried to break the English blockade of the Dutch coast.
