James distinguished himself at the Battle of Lowestoft, fought on 3rd June, 1665. He commanded the English fleet of over 100 vessels facing a Dutch fleet of similar size, commanded by Lt. Admiral Jacob van Wassenaer Obdam, who suffered losses of 24 ships captured or destroyed.
