The Portland Collection, Commemorative Medals, Aviation: Germany, the Zeppelin LZ 129 – Hindenburg, uniface silvered-bronze plaquette of the commercial passenger-carrying rigid airship, 1936-1937, unsigned, she flies l., above a tablet reading 'Hindenburg LZ 129 1936-37', swastika border, 49 x 89mm. (FM.-; Kaiser -), extremely fine and very rare
The plaquette has been noted mounted on a rectangular marble base. The airship flew from March 1936 but whilst attempting to land at the Lakehurst Naval Station at the end of the first North American transatlantic journey, she caught fire and was destroyed with the loss of 36 lives.
