The San Carlo theatre was destroyed by fire on the night of 12-13 February 1816. It was immediately rebuilt by the architect Antonio Niccolini, with increased capacity to 2500 seats. The reopening took place on 12 January 1817, with the cantata, Il sogno di Partenope 'The Dream of Partenope' by Giovanni Simone Mayr.
