World Medals, Russia, Alexander III (1845-1881-1894), the opening of the Suram Tunnel, silver medal, 1890, by L. C. Steinman, the female figures of Kutaisi and Tbilisi std., with shields of their provinces, either side of the tunnel entrance from which emerges a steam engine, the bust of the Tsar within wreath, above, rev. a cut-away plan of the tunnel through the mountain with, either side, details and names of the stations, civic laurel wreath border, 97mm. (Diakov 1046.1, R3; Sm.985; Moyaux 565/401; BDM.V, 673, as Steinmann), a small knock on the rim at 4 o'clock on the obverse, a superb medal with attractive light tone, choice extremely fine and extremely rare
Leopold Christianovich Steinman, German-born medallist, graduated from the Academy of Arts in Berlin, and from 1874 to 1876 he studied in St. Petersburg. Academy of Fine Arts, for whom he designed a prize medal. He was employed at the Mint from 1874.
The original railway line connecting Baku to Batum on the Black Sea was completed in 1883, opening the Baku oilfields to the greater world, however the Suram Pass remained a problem and with the backing of the Rothschilds and Ludvig Nobel a tunnel was proposed. Once approved, it was constructed between 1886 and 1890. Nobel also laid a pipeline for the oil.
