Canada
Lower Canada brass Original (?) "Bouquet" Sou Token ND (1863) AU Details (Reverse Scratched) NGC, Br-689, LC-43A1 (Doubtful), LeRoux-549 (R10). Reeded/engrailed edge. Medal alignment. Struck in collar, but 10 per cent off-center. Minor edge flaws, with a small gouge in the left obverse field. This may be the only known example of the reeded/brass, so-called original, Picault Bouquet Sou. Supposedly from the Hart sale in 1888. Frossard, cataloger of the Hart Collection, asserted that it had cost Hart $100, a huge amount at the time. The dies were found in 1863 on the premises of Dr. Picault, a Montreal druggist, and given to the Numismatic and Antiquarian Society of Montreal. Hart claimed that his coin (this piece) was an original piece struck with the 1837 issues. No brass piece, with reeded edge, was recorded struck in 1863. In 1888 LeRoux referred to this piece as being unique and rated it as R-10. Though Charlton designates the edge as reeded, it has a highly engrailed appearance. Sold with old collector envelope detailing provenance.
Purchased from Warren Baker on October 22, 1988; Reportedly Gerald E. Hart Collection (Edouard Frossard December 1888, Lot 1231)
