Province of Canada Mule "Bank of Montreal/New Brunswick" Penny Token 1843 AU55 Brown NGC, Br-Unl. (cf. Br-909 [NB-2] for obverse, Br-526 [PC-2] for reverse), Robins-29512. Plain edge. Reverse rotated approximately 60 degrees clockwise. Touches of mint luster around the legends, with only a slight bit of rubbing. Only the second example we have seen, the other being in our sale of the Douglas Robins Collection Part 1. Both examples are nearly equal in grade. This very rare piece is thought to be part of Taylor's activities that included the Bank of Montreal/Habitant mules and is from the same Bank of Montreal obverse die. The present specimen is the finer certified of the two--the Robins piece, an AU53 Brown, realizing $3,600 in April 2018. Sold with old collector envelope detailing provenance.

Ex. McKay-Clements Collection (Frank Rose May 1976, Lot 54)
