Otho. Denarius; Otho; 69 AD, Rome, Denarius, 2.85g. BM-12, Paris-27, C-12 (50 Fr.), RIC-22 (R3). Obv: [I]MP OTHO CAESAR AVG TR [P] Head bare r. Rx: [P]ON[T] - [MA]X Otho brandishing spear on horse prancing r. Very rare reverse type struck late in Otho's reign, commemorating his expedition against Vitellius which was to lead to his own defeat and suicide. Dr. Jyrki Muona of Helsinki, in a study of Otho's coinage, found fewer than twelve specimens with this reverse type in an assemblage of nearly 2500 denarii. Ex Jyrki Muona Collection, with miniscule drill hole in edge, because the metallic composition of this coin was tested and published by K. Butcher and M. Ponting, Metallurgy of Roman Silver Coinage, Nero to Trajan, 2014, p. 254.. VG
