Faustus Cornelius Sulla. AR Denarius, 56 BC. Obv. Head of young Hercules right, wearing lion's skin; behind, SC and FAVSTVS in monogram. Rev. Globe between four wreaths, the lower one flanked by aplustre and ear of corn, the upper jewelled and tied with fillet. Cr. 426/4a; B. 61. AR. 4.00 g. 19.05 mm. R. Rare variety with monogram on obverse. Great metal, full weight and broad flan. Superb, brilliant and lightly toned, with golden hues. EF. ���

The head of Hercules recalls that Pompey while still young had, like his hero, extended his conquests over the world. The three lower wreaths refer to the three triumphal wreaths granted to Pompey for his victories in three continents. The jewelled wreath above is the gold chaplet he was authorized to wear at public functions (RSC, I, p.40).
