East Africa East African Currency Board 1000 Shillings = 50 Pounds 15.12.1921 Pick 18s Specimen PMG Choice Uncirculated 64. Beginning in 1921, the East Africa Currency Board adopted a new Shillings / Pounds system, which included denominations from 5 Shillings all the way to up to 10,000 Shillings. This enormous range of denominations facilitated commerce as the colonies in the currency group began to rapidly expand after World War I. Additional thousands of immigrants and workers from Europe, India, and Southeast Asia emigrated to Africa, which greatly increased the population. Enormous denominations, such as this 1000 Shillings note, were mostly, but not exclusively, used within the banking system. For example, notes of this nature would have been useful in infrastructure projects, such as the building of the new capital: Nairobi. According to Currency Board records, by the 1960s, these notes were still in service, but the process of exchanging them for more serviceable denominations was underway. As such, these types are very rare today, regardless of the format. This handsome Specimen features problem-free surfaces and fresh colorations. A perforated cancellation is mentioned for accuracy. Seldom offered, this is an important King George V denomination. https://currency.ha.com/itm/world-currency/east-africa-east-african-currency-board-1000-shillings-50-pounds-15121921-pick-18s-specimen-pmg-choice-uncircu/a/4029-28238.s?type=CoinArchivesCurrency4029 HID08706262019 © 2020 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
