Switzerland Zurich Guldiner 1512
Zurich. AR Guldiner 1512 (42 mm, 29.51 g), mint master Paul Sitkust (1512-1515). Av. MON NOV THVRICENSIS CIVIT IMPERIALIS, Saints Felix, Regula and Exuperantius in an arc, holding their severed heads in their hands, including the year I5I2. Rv. Two lions each with a Zurich coat of arms and the crowned Reich coat of arms; outside wreath with the 16 Vogteiwappen: Kyburg, Gruningen, Regensdorf, Eglisau, Maschwanden, Winterthur, Stein am Rhein, Greifensee, Andelfingen, Knonau, Bulach, Elgg, Hedingen, Regensberg, Neuamt and Stammheim; at 12 o'clock two branches with rosette-like flowers. On the obverse of this coin we meet the city patrons Felix, Regula and Exuperantius. As members of the Theban Legion under the Roman Emperor Maximianus Herculius (286-305 AD), they are said to have been martyred in Zurich. According to tradition, they were executed on the Grossmunster hill because of their Christian faith, whereupon the beheaded bodies rose, took their heads in their hands and walked across the Limmat to the place where the Fraumunster is today. Hurlimann 422; HMZ 2-1122a. Very rare. VF, tooled.
