Medals by Subject, Medicine and Numismatics: Sir Hermann David Weber (1823–1918) German-born physician who practiced in England, large gilt-bronze portrait medal, 1893, by Alphée Dubois and (reverse), Frank Bowcher, bust almost full-face, HERMANN WEBER. M.D., F.R.C.P. LONDON, rev. 6 infant children hold a floral wreath around a beehive, ÆTATIS SVÆ LXX, 140mm. (FPW.83, 84), obverse good very fine, Bowcher's reverse with central solder-mark and stain, very rare
*ex Mrs Irene "Neddy" Allen stock
Hermann David Weber was knighted in 1899. FPW records the large-size medal as uniface, with Bowcher's reverse only on the small-size version. The gilt surface and solder on the reverse suggest that this was made for special display. Hermann and his son, the dermatologist Frederick Parkes Weber (1863 –1962), the author of the above reference, are remembered as eminent numismatists.
