ITALY, Papale (Stato pontificio). Nicholas V. 1447-1455. Æ Medal (43mm, 47.40 g, 12h). Holy Year issue. By Girolamo Paladino. Dated 1450 (though a 19th century restrike of a circa 1664 original). Bust left, wearing mantum and Papal tiara / Pope kneeling left, closing Porta Santa (Holy Door), surrounded by attendants. Modesti 39. Brown surfaces, small spots of green. Good VF.

From the Peter J. Merani Collection, purchased from Jencius Coins, March 2011.

The dies for this series were originally engraved by Girolamo Paladino for a series of medals commissioned by Cardinal Francesco Barberini in around 1664. They remained in the Rome mint, where successive engravers gently reworked the dies and struck new medals until the 19th century. The reverse type is an anachronism, as the Holy Door ceremony did not first take place until 1500.
