ITALY, Papale (Stato pontificio). Gregory XIV. 1590-1591. Æ Medal (33mm, 19.04 g, 12h). By Niccolò de Bonis and Giorgi Rancetti. 17th century restrike of a 1590-1591 original. Bust right, wearing camauro and mozzetta / Clement VIII standing at altar with attendants. Modesti 927. Red-brown surfaces, diagnostic die breaks. Near EF.

This medal combines an obverse of Gregory XIV with a reverse used on medals of Clement VIII. Examples in a more reddish copper are from the 17th century. After the obverse die suffered a major break, a new replica die was cut in the 1830s.
