ROMAN. Annius Martialis & Cobnertus . 1st-4th centuries AD. PB Seal (21mm, 8.04 g, 6h). ANNIVS/ MART+IALIS / KOB/NЄR in retrograde; palm frond below, star to left. Apparently unpublished. VF. Extremely rare and interesting.

From the Peter J. Merani Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group 37 (20 March 1996), lot 2663. Reportedly found in northern England.

The name Annius Martialis is attested at Vindolanda, scratched on a portion of pewter plate. (Burnham et al, "Roman Britain in 2002," in Britannia 34 [2003] , p. 376, 33) Cobbnertus is a name of Gallic origin commonly associated with the production of terra sigillata.
