The second Pope from Avignon and a native of Cahors, John XXII involved himself in the political and religious issues of many European countries, thus making him a very controversial figure. He was involved in an unpopular belief surrounding the Beatific Vision, arguing against the belief that those who are saved experience the understanding of God before the Last Judgment.
