The 'P' mark on the reverse has previously been considered a mintmark; however, since the Sierra Leone coinage was engraved by the Frenchman, Ponthon, it may well be intended to represent his name. This initial is only known to one die.
This reverse die is known in three states: a) undamaged condition, b) with a die flaw at 3 o'clock leaving an excess cud of metal, and c) as previous but with an additional die crack at 5 o'clock. This group contains examples of all three die types.
