Sierra Leone, Sierra Leone Company, bronze Pennies (7), 1791-P, Heaton mint, engraved by Ponthon, lion facing, two hairs in tail, AFRICA in exergue, SIERRA LEONE COMPANY above, rev. clasped hands, value above and below, date below, P initial between 7 and 9 of date, plain edge (Vice 8X; cf. KM 2.2). A recently discovered variety with a serifed 'P' on reverse, extremely rare, four examples certified as AU55 BN, AU50 BN, AU Details (Surface Hairlines), VF Details (Rim Damage, Cleaned), others with scratches, fine to very fine. (7)

NGC Certifications 4253844-006, 4246277-004, 3813286-001, 4238569-008.

The 'P' mark on the reverse has previously been considered a mintmark; however, since the Sierra Leone coinage was engraved by the Frenchman, Ponthon, it may well be intended to represent his name. This initial is only known to one die.

This reverse die is known in three states: a) undamaged condition, b) with a die flaw at 3 o'clock leaving an excess cud of metal, and c) as previous but with an additional die crack at 5 o'clock. This group contains examples of all three die types.
