Commodus, as Caesar (AD 177-192). AV aureus (20mm, 7.24 gm, 12h). NGC Choice VF 5/5 - 4/5. Rome, AD 175. COMMODO CAES-AVG FIL GERM, bare headed, draped bust of Commodus right, seen from behind / LIBERALITAS•AVG, Commodus (on right), togate, seated left on curule chair set on platform, right hand extended; Liberalitas (in center) standing left, coin counter with five slots upward in right hand, cornucopia in left, preparing to distribute largesse to citizen (at left) mounting steps right with open toga. RIC III (Marcus Aurelius) 597. Calicó 2274 (same reverse die). Extremely rare and attractive of this first issue to feature the portrait of Commodus. Only three examples in sales archives, this specimen included.
