Maximian (AD 286-310). AV aureus (19mm, 5.34 gm, 5h). NGC MS 5/5 - 3/5, brushed. Ticinum, AD 303. MAXIMIAN-VS AVGVSTVS, laureate head of Maximian right / X X / MAXI/MIAN/I AVG / SMT, legend in four lines within laurel wreath terminating in large jewel. RIC VI 11b. Calicó 4770 (same dies). Sharply struck on bright, reflective flan.
This issue was struck in celebration of Diocletian's vicennalia on 20 November AD 303, a mere 18 months before Diocletian and Maximian retired, on 1 May AD 305, in accordance with Diocletian's design of the Tetrarchy.
