Austria
Windischgrätz. Joseph Nicholas gold 5 Ducat 1777 XF Details (Removed From Jewelry) NGC, Vienna mint, KM13 (Rare), Fr-907 (Rare), von Schluthess-Rechberg Collection-Unl., Reimmann-Unl., Donebauer-Unl., Horsky-Unl. 17.34gm. Struck from 1/2 Taler dies (cf. KM11). An exquisite rarity from this small but notable noble Austrian house, entirely absent from the collections of the Ritter von Schluthess-Rechberg, Reimmann, Donebauer, and Horsky, with the type entirely unpictured in either Friedberg or the Standard Catalog of World Coins. Accordingly to our research, only a single other specimen has come to auction in recent years, which brought the equivalent of over $60,000 in a European auction in February 2019. While admitting the peppered surfaces and rough edges often associated with ex-jewelry pieces--interestingly, the other known specimen also had an irregular edge--this is hardly surprising for what could only have been a prestige piece, and the largest denomination produced during Joseph Nicholas' reign. Of the highest rarity, and worthy of close bidder consideration.
Chamberlain to Archduchess Marie Antoinette, Joseph Nicholas played an important role in solidifying the position of his family within Habsburg imperial politics. In 1781, he purchased the lordships of Tachov, Ctěnice, and Štěkeň from the Ernestines--Tachov becoming the family's new seat, from which his son Alfred would be elevated as a representative of the emperor at the Reichstag.
