German States
Saxony. Friedrich III, Johann, & Georg Taler ND (1508-1552) MS61 NGC, Annaberg mint, Dav-9709A, Schulten-2996, Schnee-19. An elusive Saxon Klappmützentaler issue struck in the first half of the 16th century, and extremely scarce in this state of preservation. Admitting a strike on the slightly weaker side to the obverse (reverse as holdered), the sharpness in the framing legends and throughout the "facing brothers" reverse leaves little doubt as to the exceptional Mint State condition of the offering. A gentle metallic patina overlies the fields, with a soft undercurrent of sunset red enhancing the eye appeal, in conjunction with noteworthy glints of underlying mint luster. The early portrait Talers of Friedrich the Wise always inspire ample bidding interest amongst even seasoned German collectors, and it seems safe to assume that, though NGC certification data are not currently available for this type, only very few, at most, have been recognized at this conditional tier.
