Great Britain
Elizabeth I (1558-1603) gold Sovereign of 30 Shillings ND (1584-1586) AU Details (Plugged) NGC, Tower mint, Escallop mm, Sixth Issue, S-2529, N-2003 (R), Schneider-780. 15.07gm. (escallop): ELIZABETH: D' • G' • ANG' • | FRA' • ET: HIB' • REGINA:, Elizabeth enthroned facing within tressure, scepter in right hand, globus in left, portcullis at feet / (escallop) A • DNO' • FACTV' • EST • ISTVD • ET • EST • MIRAB' • IN • OCVLIS • NRS, royal shield over Tudor rose. A type which speaks to the decadence of and undeniable prestige conferred by Tudor gold coinage--a fact evinced not only by the design's recycling through the reigns of all Henry VIII's children despite their differences, but also by its reproduction as late as the reign of James I. Intricately designed in a manner that must have made it a masterpiece of its age, many of Elizabeth's Sovereigns unfortunately have seen use in jewelry for personal adornment, leaving evidence of cleaning, tooling, or repair work. Though this representative does show an extremely minor plugging around the escallop mintmark on the reverse, this is hardly a feature that sticks out to the viewer without close inspection under magnification, and can rapidly be discounted. Otherwise soundly and evenly struck, we can only describe the present offering as enviable.
