British India. Bengal Presidency gold Proof Restrike Mohur AH 1202 Year 19 (c. 1830) PR64 Cameo PCGS, Calcutta mint, cf. KM112 (listed as reeded edge), Prid-86, Stevens-9.2 (R). Edge grained left. With crescent mintmark. A most puzzling type within this long and complex series, reportedly representing an unadopted Pattern commissioned for the opening of the new mint in the year 1830. Pridmore designated this type, with the edge obliquely milled, as a "modern restrike," although he provided no indication as to during which period it was produced, with Stevens, while continuing to call the piece a "later striking", also providing no further dating information. In our research, we have been able to locate only one other specimen coming to auction, in Part 2 of the David Fore Collection, which hammered for the equivalent of $9400 in May 2013. This lack of specimens on the market in itself seems to point to the coin's utter scarcity, and certainly places it among the great rarities of the Bengal Presidency.
