Republic gold "Hookneck" 8 Escudos 1823 Mo-JM AU Details (Cleaning) PCGS, Mexico City mint, KM382.1, Fr-63, Onza-1994 var. (A few examples known; there, Type 2). Type 1, with curved snake's tail, and cap pointing to "A." A classic rarity of the early Republican series, and only the sixth example of this one-year type and inaugural date for the denomination we have handled. Made instantly recognizable and covetable as the sole hookneck in gold attainable for collectors, the coin at hand preserves an admirable amount of detail for the type, expressing full detail throughout. Rarely locatable outside of details grades, we would note that the last specimen at this level we offered brought $16,800 in our August 2020 Platinum Night sale.
