Bolivia
Republic silver "Battle of Ayacucho" Medal ND (c. 1825) MS61 NGC, Potosi mint, Barac-3, Fonrobert-9449, R&S-Bo1. 42x35mm. Instituted 11 August 1825. Obv. Bolívar standing on Potosí holding Liberty Cap, radiant sun in background, pillar decorated with cannons and flags below. Rev. "La Republica Bolivar Agradecida Al Heroe Cuyo Nombre Lleva" (The Bolivar (Bolivian) Republic [Is] Grateful to the Hero Whose Name it Bears). An incredibly attractive example of this rare medal produced for the Bolivian victory at the Battle of Ayacucho, despite Ross and Stahl noting that few Bolivian troops were believed to have fought in the battle. Overlaid in a handsome gunmetal patina backlit by champagne hues, this is only the second example of the issue we have encountered in silver, and the third in total, with the last, also an MS61, bringing $7800 as part of our October 2019 sale of the Dresden Collection.
