Nicholas II copper Pattern "Alexander II Monument" Rouble 1898-A AU Details (Cleaned) NGC, St. Petersburg mint, KM-Pn159, Sev-4057 (Very Rare), Bit-M326 (R1; designated as a medal), Diakov-1261.2 (R1; same). Only the fourth example of this difficult off-metal issue we have offered, and one which only becomes available with great irregularity on the auction market. It is somewhat unclear whether or not the present issue was intended as an off-metal Pattern rouble, or more simply as a medallic issue. Severin refers to the type as a trial striking, though both Bitkin and Diakov term it a medal. Though the type closely mirrors the rouble in silver, it admittedly lacks the denomination. Moreover, the fact that the same design also exists in a very large module (c. 78mm, Diakov-1261.1) certainly points to this size being more medallic.
