The bridge depicted is traditionally identified as Trajan's Bridge over the Danube, located east of the Iron Gates and across the present-day border of Romania and Serbia. The actual bridge spanned over 1000m and was comprised of numerous arches. It was the first bridge built over the lower Danube and is considered to have been the longest arch bridge for more than 1,000 years.
